Consumers are reporting this popular brand of face cleanser and face scrubs burned and irritated skin.
One consumer reported " sort of didn't feel good when I woke up, and then over the next few days my face started swelling up and became scaly," she said. "My eyes were almost swollen shut, too — I used the scrub near my eyes so that must have been why. But I've used apricot fruit scrubs before and other non-foaming fragrance-free gentle scrubs from Neutrogena, and never experienced a reaction like this before, so I didn't know what was causing it."
To treat her issue, consumer told Cosmopolitan.com that she visited her primary care physician who gave her prednisone and eye drops to calm down her skin and eye irritation. But what caused the reaction in the first place?
"With any product, you need to pay attention to your skin," New York City cosmetic dermatologist Doris Day, MD, says. "While products from bigger brands undergo a lot of testing and have tight quality control, that doesn't guarantee the product isn't going to cause irritation on your skin. Especially because fragrance and preservatives can cause an imbalance to your skin's barrier and that's where you'll see the greatest risk of reactions."
In this consumers case, the combination of the fragrance the product contains and the grittiness of the scrub was probably too much for her skin, which is what caused her irritation reaction. To avoid this from happening to you with any new product, test it on your inner arm. "That area is less sensitive, so if you react on your inner arm you'll most likely react on your face, since it tends to be more sensitive," Day says.
This consumer isn't the only person who's had issues with this product though. She researched the product and found multiple complaints. For example, Kailyn of Fort Worth, Texas, said, "I purchased the oil free Neutrogena pink grapefruit face scrub. I used it that night and in the morning later - throughout the day my face was burning, itching and getting so rough. I put aquaphor on my face just so my face wouldn't be dry and I woke up in the morning with a swollen face. So I immediately went to a doctor but my face is still swollen and itching like crazy. No one should have to go through this!!!"
Lastly, here at Glory Essentials, we had a customer two weeks ago contact us stating "Oh my word! I got a chemical burn from using a Neutrogena cleanser, and I almost started crying because of how bad it hurt!!! I went to my house and washed everything off with your Black Rose Body bar (my actual face bar is in Stockton) and I felt instant relief 😅 never going back lol! Thanks for saving my face after using this product." After seeing her, she had severe skin burns and dry irritation all over her face, this was a week after her use, her face still had burn spots, dryness and irritation.
Benefits of Using Real Natural Ingredients in Natural Soap
(NewsTarget) The next time you walk down the soap aisle at your favorite store enjoying the fresh, clean scents and the bright colorful packaging, pay attention. Look at the labels. The vast majority of the products on the shelf don't say 'soap' on their labels. They might be called beauty bars, moisturizing bars, or body bars, but not soap. That's because these bars aren't actually soap and can't legally claim to be; they're detergents. The manufacturers have removed most of the 'good' stuff that occurs in the soap making process, and replaced it with synthetic lathering agents and harsh chemicals. These cheap, plentiful detergent bars are not only bad for your skin, but they're also bad for the planet, too.
What's so bad about commcercial soaps?
Commercial soap manufacturers make it a practice to remove the glycerine that is produced during the saponification (soap-making) process. The glycerine is a highly profitable substance, often sold to other companies who use it to make lotions and moisturizers, which your skin, now dried out from the harsh detergent 'soap,' desperately needs.
Most commercially produced bars contain synthetic lathering agents, artificial colors, and a slew of chemicals we can't even pronounce. Antibacterial and antimicrobial soaps often contain triclosan. Triclosan is a toxic chemical that is known to cause cancer. According to the National Coalition Against the Misuse of Pesticides (NCAMP), manufacturers of a number of triclosan-containing products claim that the active ingredient continues to work for as long as 12 hours after use. Consumers are, therefore, exposed to triclosan for much longer than the 20 seconds it takes to wash their hands or face.
Always remember that your skin is porous and absorbent. It absorbs whatever it comes in contact with, much the same as sticking something in your mouth. Chronic use of chemical laden products will cause the body to store the chemicals in the body fat or even in the brain. With enough accumulations of toxins in the body, illness can occur.
These harmful chemicals and toxins are now finding their way into our eco-system. Every time that lather goes down the drain, those pollutants are going with it. A recent report by the UK's Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) revealed that synthetic chemicals from soap, body washes, shampoos and other healthcare products were sneaking through the filters at water purification plants. The list of offenders included phthalates, which are linked to reproductive disorders in both humans and animals, and parabens, a preservative, which links to cancer.
